Local Aberavon MP, Stephen Kinnock, today asked the Secretary of State for Wales to explain why the Baglan Industrial Park has been chosen as the location for the proposed Category C prison.

Stephen Kinnock also asked why he has yet to receive any response to his letter to the Prisons Minister, Sam Gyimah, which was sent well over a month ago (on 23 March).

In his letter Stephen Kinnock asked the Minister to: confirm the proposed site of the prison and to explain why that site has been chosen; if any alternative sites were considered; what steps the Ministry of Justice had taken to engage with our local community and when the Prisons Minister will be coming to Port Talbot to meet local residents and hear their views on the proposed prison?

Stephen also asked for guarantees that local workers and locally sourced materials are used in the construction process of the project, and for assurances that the prison would employ local people.

Just as the letter has still not been answered, neither did Stephen receive an answer from the Secretary of State for Wales. The Welsh Secretary failed to answer the question.

This once again shows that the Conservative government do not care about the people of Aberavon enough to even answer a question or reply to a letter.

Stephen Kinnock said: “I asked the government serious questions about the proposed prison and hoped for a serious answer. Instead, I’ve seen my letter ignored for over a month, and had an inaccurate answer in Parliament that could have been straight of a Tory campaign leaflet. That is not good enough. I will keep on putting pressure on the government to ensure that the voice of our community is heard and our concerns are addressed.

“The Conservatives want a blank cheque to impose the will of London on our community. I will not stand for that, and will keep on fighting as Aberavons strong local campaigner with a national voice.”
