Boris is playing politics with steel workers' lives, says Port Talbot MP

Sun

Tory bungler Boris Johnson has suddenly discovered he cares about British steel. Just as last month he suddenly discovered he was in favour of leaving the EU.

This man’s opportunism knows no bounds.

Boris was in Wales today, but he didn’t come to Port Talbot – I’d guess the closest the Blonde Opportunist has ever even come to my constituency is a Ken Clarke style drive-by.

For Boris, Brexit may be a jolly, but it’s a reckless political experiment, carried out on the backs of working people like Port Talbot’s steelworkers. Brexit won’t make any difference to Boris and his chums, but it will devastate British industry.

Boris argues leaving the EU would be good for our steel industry; well I’d recommend he listen to the industry and its workers, rather than his Kensington Brexit buddies.

If you listen to the steelworkers in Port Talbot and across the country you hear a very different story to the Brexit campaigns propaganda.

The men and women working in the steel industry know that leaving Europe would be a killer blow for British steel.

Over half our steel exports are to Europe. Brexit will not only mean crippling tariffs, but also the loss of continent wide anti-dumping measures against anti-competitive, state-subsidized Chinese steel, the main threat to British steel.

Boris champions the ‘Canada model’ of Brexit. Well, that would mean tariffs of over 20 per cent on British steel, a devastating blow from which the industry wouldn’t recover.

The truth is that Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party have rolled out the red carpet for Beijing, undermining European efforts to reform tariffs and duties. They’ve been the ringleaders against reforms that would allow us to impose proper tariffs on Chinese dumped steel.

The real problem facing British steel isn’t Europe, it's the Conservative Party.
