I visited the British Oxygen Company site in Margam and was given a tour of the facility. BOC Gases Margam is a major industrial gases production and distribution facility providing gas for the steel works and is a key supplier to hundreds of businesses across south Wales including the health board.
I spoke with the workforce, a large number of whom started with the company as apprentices and moved on to work for the company. They are a multi skilled, versatile and experienced workforce.
Activities on the site include cryogenic air separation, bulk storage of liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and liquid argon, gaseous oxygen and nitrogen compression, steam reforming of natural gas and separation of pure hydrogen, and bulk storage and distribution of gaseous hydrogen. These are highly automated processes which can be operated remotely.
