Responding to the news that Sir Ivan Rogers has resigned in his role as UK ambassador to the EU, Stephen Kinnock said:
Sir Ivan Rogers is one of the UK's most experienced and skilful diplomats, and he has been playing an absolutely pivotal role in the Brexit process. His principal task, as our envoy to the member states and EU institutions, is to build the alliances and coalitions that are going to be so vital as we head into the Brexit negotiations. And with Boris and the Brexiteers blundering around like bulls in a china shop, we know that the work of our diplomatic corps has never been more important.
Sir Ivan's resignation, seemingly out of the blue, raises serious concerns about the government's shambolic approach. Theresa May is recklessly sailing our country into uncharted waters, without a map or a compass. Let us hope that a replacement for Sir Ivan can be put in place rapidly, as there can be no doubt that the ship is in serious need of steadying.
