I was approached by South Wales Evening Post asking for an update on what happened at the public meeting on Thursday. The comments I made have been misinterpreted in today’s article

As I set out in my presentation at the public meeting on Thursday, my priority is to get the Ministry of Justice to make a definitive and rapid decision on the Prison to avoid the risk of the community being left in a state of long term limbo.

The best way to achieve this is by getting the Ministry of Justice to commit to an alternative site in South Wales.

After Felidre and Brocastle on the Ministry of Justice list, are the remaining 17 sites, which include sites within the Neath Port Talbot area. There is then the possibility for further alternative sites elsewhere in South Wales, or in Neath Port Talbot such as Kenfig Industrial Estate.

Therefore, to suggest that I ‘want an alternative site in area for new jail’ is to misrepresent the case that I made at the public meeting, where I Where I simply outlined the alternative site options.

Clearly, if we are open to the possibility of alternative site in South Wales, then an alternative site in Neath Port Talbot has to be one of the many possible options for consideration.
