I am calling on the Government to guarantee they will buy British steel for these ships. These contracts are worth hundreds of jobs

British steelworkers will feel incredibly let down if the steel for the Global Combat Ships is bought from foreign firms.

We produce the best steel in the world here in Britain – the best steel money can buy – so it’s nothing to do with the quality of British steel.

This sends completely the wrong message to British workers.

It’s an absolute disgrace. This is about national security.

I don’t think any of the steelworkers in the country can understand why the Government isn’t doing more to help them.

These contracts are worth millions of pounds and hundreds of jobs.

I don’t know how the Prime Minister and Business Minister Anna Soubry can look themselves in the eye when they look in the mirror in the morning, when they are doing what they are doing to the British steel industry.

This is further evidence of the fact that so far all we have had from the Government are warm words and frozen deeds.

The Government has set up all these working groups since the Steel Summit, but they are just talking shops.

What on earth have they been doing?
