Commenting on recent reports about the future of the Port Talbot steelworks and future investment, Stephen Kinnock, Member of Parliament for Aberavon said:

“Tata Steel should end the uncertainty over the future of Strip Products UK and the Port Talbot steelworks.

“It is essential that Port Talbot receives a long term commitment to continued primary steel making which is only sustainable in the long term with two fully operational blast furnaces.

“Steelworkers and their families in my constituency and up and down the country have already had six months of uncertainty around the proposed sale. That process has been paused, but there is yet more uncertainty around the possibility of a joint venture, and now we have these new developments.

“With Christmas looming large, it really is time to settle these issues. I therefore urge Tata Steel and the British government to make the long term investments and commitments that are the preconditions for a secure and prosperous future.”
