Stephen Kinnock MP recently attended the unveiling of a Blue Plaque at the former home of Aneurin Bevan and Jennie Lee.

Bevan, born in Tredegar in 1897, was elected as the MP for Ebbw Vale in 1929, and is revered as the architect of the National Health Service which came into being in 1948. He married Lee in 1934. Lee was elected to Parliament in 1929, the youngest woman at that time to have ever been elected, and as Minister for the Arts in Harold Wilson’s Government she played a key role in the establishment of the Open University, laying the foundation stone in the first OU library.

The plaque is at their former home at 23 Cliveden Place, where they lived between 1944 – 1954.

Mr Kinnock said, “It was an honour to have attended the unveiling of the plaque commemorating the lives of two outstanding politicians. Bevan and Lee both played pivotal roles in making our society fairer and more equal, and are giants of the Labour Movement.”
