MPs from different sides of the political divide have come together to express their collective support for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.
Labour MPs Carolyn Harris (Swansea East) and Stephen Kinnock (Aberavon), in whose neighbouring constituencies the Lagoon will be based, have been joined by Welsh Lib Dem Mark Williams, Plaid Cymru’s Liz Saville-Roberts and the Green’s Caroline Lucas in an open letter to Amber Rudd, the Conservative Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.
In their letter the MPs make the case for the benefits that the Lagoon will bring in terms of jobs and clean energy, and point out that the government has an excellent opportunity to show the world that the UK is practising what it preaches at the crucial climate change talks in Paris next week.
Kinnock and Harris said:
‘This open letter demonstrates in no uncertain terms that there is strong cross-party support for the Lagoon, expressed by politicians from a range of parties who together represent a clear majority of the Welsh electorate. We hope that the Conservative government listens to the voice of Wales on this question, and brings the project approval process to a rapid and positive conclusion’.
