Government investment in decarbonising the Port Talbot steelworks is long overdue. We desperately need a government-sector partnership that will safeguard well-paid local jobs and secure the future production of the steel that underpins our national security, our critical infrastructure and our entire manufacturing base.

Decarbonisation must not mean deindustrialisation. This means that we must see investment not only in electric arc furnaces but hydrogen, direct reduced iron and carbon capture in order to meet customer demand and ensure our steelmakers are competing on a level playing field.
